1933-1934, The Bursa Criminal Court Case

Nâzým Hikmet was arrested on 22 March 1933, on grounds of launching an underground organisation and making communist propaganda by distributing booklets and posting bills on walls in Bursa, Istanbul and Adana. He was interrogated in Istanbul for a while and then was sent to Bursa for final sentencing on 1 June 1933.
On 27 August 1933, the court hearing began with the demand of execution, but it was concluded with a five-year prison sentence on 31 January 1934. He had written his famous poem entitled "Epistle to My Wife," that began with the words, "33-11-11, Bursa" throughout these hearings.
Afterwards, the Supreme Court of Appeals revoked the sentence, but the Bursa Court resisted in its decision and only decreased it to a four-year imprisonment. Because of the General Amnesty which was declared on the tenth year of the foundation of the Republic, Nâzým Hikmet's three-year sentence had been decreased to one year.
But Nâzým Hikmet had already served a term of a year and half. Thus on 12 August 1934, he was released and came to Istanbul having served six months extra.
